Staying Informed

A key to effective citizen involvement is being well informed. Much of the information needed to stay informed is in government hands. Fortunately, it is getting easier to access government information on air quality issues. There are two national pollutant inventories in Canada and many provinces compile and publish similar inventories. Environment Canada and many of its provincial counterparts regularly publish statistics on air quality and related issues of compliance and enforcement. As well, in some jurisdictions there are environmental registries that contain useful data on a variety of environmental matters. When government refuses to disclose information that you need, its decision can usually be challenged under provincial or federal freedom of information laws. For a detailed list of names, web sites and addresses see Links.
